Self confessed weeb, japanese culture lover and language learner, toku enthusiast who spends way too much time watching anime, reading manga, doing henshin poses and playing video games.
Me: I should read more japanese to progress faster.

Also me: let's go with Musashi by Yoshikawa Eiji.

Why do I do this?

Unironically, the best purchases I've made for my switch are all the switch online controllers. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and playing megadrive, nes, super nes and N64 games with their respective controllers is so satisfying.

This is perhaps the weirdest advice I can give, but if you faced the same problems I did when trying to immerse in japanese, especially when it comes to reading, this might actually help.

So, when I was a teen, I used to read a LOT. I must have read close to 2K books in the span of 10 years.

I just finished Metaphor Refantazio and... It's my GOTY. No matter whether or not it wins, it has my vote.

Atlus really outdid themselves with this title. In fact, I couldn't put down the controller during the latter half of the game. It's a truly magnificent game that might be Atlus' very best.

After starting my first light novel in japanese, I realized just how true the "acquisition by immersion is the most effective" argument is. It's even truer than I thought possible.

While I require constant checkings on the dictionary (which is why I'm using bookwalker, it's very useful)...

Speaking of Japan Foundation, please sign up for their digital library card and borrow ebooks, audiobooks, digital magazines for free using the Libby app. Love the fact that it isn’t just English but also Japanese. www.jflalc.org/libby

My decision to deactivate my twitter account was a decision I made after months of wondering if I do. Months where I spent more time there beefing with people instead of doing something, anything that I enjoyed. It's on me, engaging with the worst people instead of doing something else is my fault.

What? I can play rock paper scissors with Manfred in Dragon Age Veilguard?

GOTY. GOTMGFY.

Hey soo... my american friends, I'm sorry. If you need a weird, dorky emotional support french... I'm here.

Just started Veilguard. I have to admit, I only played DA:O when it came out, only once and never played the other games, so I'm pretty green when it comes to this series, but I'm having fun so far.

YouTube is plagued with fake polyglots who make shorts speaking another language, claiming fluency. Now, there are arguably good things emerging from these videos: people getting motivated to learn. It becomes a problem when the video claims "you can learn this language is x months"

I WISH I had known earlier about marumori as a ressource for learning japanese. It might not be the best - after all, no ressource is the best at everything - but the fact that they have curated study lists for GAMES??? NOVELS????? And even anime incoming???????????? is just insanely motivating.

What was your defining gaming moment? The thing that made you realize, you were in it for the long run? Mine was arguably FF7. It was easily the first time I realized how much in depth games could be. And thus started a lifelong love for JRPG in particular, and games in general.

The famous green owl app Duolingo is going even harder into AI made by stolen content. It's not curated by native speakers so you have no idea if what you're learning is correct. Their algorithm overall tries to hit the happy brain juices instead of helping you learn. So here are some alternatives!

Because I keep starting games, play a few hours with them, then kinda forget about them for weeks, months or even years, I've actually took upon me to ALWAYS have a readme file in the game's folder explaining where I'm at, what I was doing when I stopped, etc...

I think one of the biggest problems I have, right now, in my japanese language journey is that I'm at a crossroads. One the one hand, I'm generally too advanced for many of the apps/methods I see being praised, but whenever I open a manga, start a game or watch an anime, I'm easily overwhelmed.

Using video games to learn Japanese might seem fun - and it is, but it's also mentally exhausting.
