Delighted to have my photography research featured in the British Ecological Society Niche magazine!

We talk about photoelicitation, commensality and labour exploitation in Almería's intensive greenhouses.

Earlier this year I was awarded a merit in a @onewater_blue-@UNESCO photography competition for my work in Almería, Spain, on water scarcity in the intensive greenhouses there.

It's now featured online! #photography #water

9/ Los Grillos is a warning.

Rather than improving conditions for workers, authorities are normalising surveillance, restriction, and control.

The same food that fills Europe’s supermarkets is produced in conditions designed to keep its workers invisible.

8/ Spain’s economy depends on migrant labour: 👷 13.6% of jobs are held by foreign workers

🌍 In Almería, migrants make up at least 25% of the workforce (many more unregistered)

But instead of protecting their rights, Spain criminalises and exploits them.

7/ Migration to Spain continues to rise—driven by climate change, war, and Europe’s own industries.

In Senegal, for example, industrial fishing fleets (often European) deplete local fish stocks, forcing fishermen to migrate. Many end up in Almería’s greenhouses.

6/ Authorities justify Los Grillos as a "solution" to the region’s informal settlements.

But who benefits from locking workers away? The same agricultural industry that thrives on their precarity.

5/ Migrants in Almería already face brutal conditions:
🔹 Toxic pesticide exposure
🔹 No contracts, no rights
🔹 Wages as low as €25/day
🔹 Employers who evade labour laws by hiring undocumented workers

And now, the state wants to confine them.

4/ This is surveillance, not shelter.

Imagine working 10+ hours in a 45°C greenhouse, then returning to a walled-off compound where your movements are monitored.

Los Grillos isn’t a housing project—it’s a tool for control.
February 13, 2025 at 3:40 PM
3/ Los Grillos was supposed to provide humane housing.

But instead of safe, dignified homes, the complex looks eerily like a prison:

High fences
Security cameras
Controlled entry/exit
A curfew for residents
February 13, 2025 at 3:40 PM
2/ Many live in makeshift camps built from discarded plastic sheeting and pallets. These settlements lack water, sanitation, and electricity.

When fires or planned demolitions destroy them, residents are left homeless. The authorities’ solution? Los Grillos.
February 13, 2025 at 3:40 PM
1/ In Almería, Spain’s "Sea of Plastic" produces 3.8M tonnes of fruit & veg annually—most of it for export.

This billion-euro industry relies on tens of thousands of undocumented migrants, working in extreme heat for wages well below the legal minimum.

🚨 Spain is building an open-air prison for migrant workers.

Los Grillos, a new housing project in Almería, was meant to replace informal settlements. Instead, it has fences, security cameras, and a curfew.

A thread on Europe’s hidden exploitation. 🧵👇

"CASI workplace harassment"

As many as 120,000 migrants maintain the 32,000ha of plastic greenhouses in Almería - the source of much of Europe's winter fruit and veg - many undocumented and working in dangerous conditions for low pay.

As an environmental scientist by training, I'm used to the privilege of doing field work in beautiful locations, but this stark location (a slum in the greenhouses in Almería) was beautiful because of the amazing people who participated in our study
