"We’re creating something even more dangerous to the country: A masked monster of a law enforcement agency, one uniquely unsuited for its new power, authority, reach, and funding levels."
Spending $200 billion on ICE is a terrible idea
I've covered federal law enforcement for two decades. Here are the things that worry me most.

Anti-ICE organizing in New York City:

People who showed up to the federal immigration building, referred to as just ‘26 Federal Plaza’ or ‘FP’ to protest & stop ICE from transferring people they arrested, were blocked by NYPD at numerous intervals for low level infractions.

At least 50 of those men were here in the US legally and never violated immigration law.
Cato has published my comprehensive review of the ~240 Venezuelans the US government renditioned 2 months ago to Salvador’s notorious prison. We identified FIFTY who came legally, never violated any immigration law, but are imprisoned at the US government’s request and at US taxpayer expense.

None of the 278 men sent to CECOT have been returned. Meanwhile their lawyer has been arrested and "disappeared" in El Salvador.

ICE threatening charges against people for asking supposed officers to show their badges is weakness. Not succeeding where they hoped to, left relying on threats that likely won’t go anywhere in court (harassment isn’t nothing, but it’s limited).

It’s a sign to resist their abuses more, not less.

Men in plainclothes, one in a balaclava, raided the Charlottesville courthouse today. They abducted a local painter whose case (allegedly fighting with his roommate) was being dismissed, and another who was there paying fines. They took them away in unmarked vans.

This has been bouncing around the back of my head for a while. Seems highly dependent on whether global economic fortunes stay coupled to the US, and whether the "China effect" Akshat and Amy describe can offset the chaos initiated by Trump 🤔 Better hope so
Challenge accepted, Amy. So here's one bull case for the energy transition.

Chinese economic growth will fall as a result of Trump's tariffs. Its leadership is already discussing injecting a stimulus. Now typically stimulus in a carbon-heavy economy is more emissions, but... 🧵
I’m gonna say something that is going to sound crazy, but when has that ever stopped me from saying something publicly: there is a way in which the U.S. chucking its position in the world could actually fast-track energy transition. A few things that have me thinking this way 🧵
