Neighbours Against Wood Smoke
@nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Campaigning for legal protections for neighbours of wood burners.

Neighbours face inhumane levels of toxic pollution from "Ecodesign" stoves.
Definitely need to regulate ALL solid fuel burning, including bonfires, firepits, BBQs, etc. as well as Drax. However from a public heath perspective Drax is much less problematic as its away from population centres and has a lot of filtering (as do crematoria)

Its not carbon neutral due to the knock on impacts of the air pollution it causes. Also have to consider all the other GHGs emitted by burning wood. Its not "just" about CO2 and the environment - public health needs to be the main focus.
November 22, 2025 at 6:09 PM
And burning "dry" wood is different, not better in terms of pollution, please stop promoting this dangerous myth @greenparty.org.uk "Modern" stoves using "Ready to Burn" wood are now largest source of carcinogenic Benzo[a]pyrene in UK. @zackpolanski.bsky.social please take a stand on wood burning.
November 22, 2025 at 12:52 PM
@greenparty.org.uk needs to acknowledge that their “little wood burner” causes more damage to public health & environment than any transport method. People who claim to care about AQ sticking their fingers in their ears by blocking/muting clean air campaigners who mention wood burning is terrible!
November 22, 2025 at 12:52 PM
As with most emissions, questions should be asked of the stove industry and some @greenparty.org.uk “environmentalists” who promote the “wood burning is carbon neutral” myth. Average gas boiler emits 163.3grams of #methane per year while an average “Ecodesign” stove emits 3.156kg! (NAEI & govt data)
November 22, 2025 at 12:17 PM
Failure to properly insulate before heat pump installation has given the stove industry an unethical marketing ploy –encouraging people to buy “modern” stoves to “compliment” heat pumps & solar panels. These deadly appliances are hundreds of times worse for public health/environment than gas boilers
November 20, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Time for @greenparty.org.uk to take a stand on wood burning @zackpolanski.bsky.social? The science is very clear, your members should not be taken in by the misinformation of the stove industry.GHGs are worse for wood burning than any other heating choice by a long way

Great article, but wood burning in all its forms (368.45kg) emits more Mercury than crematoria (364.8kg) according to NAEI data. Yet no mention in the article. Domestic wood burning emits more than double the Mercury of all natural gas power stations in the UK.
October 31, 2025 at 10:59 AM
Other GHG emissions listed in NAEI are much worse than gas boilers. We also need to consider the emissions per user as there are 817,000 Ecodesign in UK (SAI data) yet 23m gas boilers. Please don’t give the SIA ammunition to include wood burners in Future Homes Standard @nestauk.bsky.social 4/5
October 29, 2025 at 11:20 AM
Sorry, but the statement “Fossil boilers are responsible for 96% of emissions from homes” is very misleading. Presumably CO2, not other GHG, PM, etc emissions? (& thats believing the wood burning is carbon neutral myth!) Wood burning is MUCH more polluting than gas boilers for most (all?) emissions.
October 27, 2025 at 10:15 PM
It doesn’t make any sense why so many “environmentalists” support wood burning. Perhaps @sianberry.bsky.social supporting Ella’s Law 2nd reading in the Commons soon will prompt @greenparty.org.uk to finally acknowledge the health & environmental impacts & create a policy? @zackpolanski.bsky.social?
October 26, 2025 at 4:25 PM
Gas cooking & boilers are a very different issue to wood burning. We have control over our exposure to gas & our choice will not impact others in the neighbourhood. Using “Ready to Burn” wood in “Ecodesign” stoves (817,00 users) >> gas boilers (23m users)! Hourly emissions are not in same ball park!

Gas cooking & boilers are a very different issue to wood burning. We are in control over our exposure to gas & our choice will not impact others in the neighbourhood. Solid fuel pollution (mostly wood) in “Ecodesign” stoves (817,00 users) is not even in the same ball park as gas boilers (23m users)!

“Ecodesign” stoves now create more PM2.5 pollution than ALL powers stations in the UK and “modern” stoves burning “Ready to Burn” wood are the largest source of carcinogenic Benzo[a]pyrene in the UK. These extremely high emissions are often emitted less than 2m from neighbours windows.
October 8, 2025 at 8:48 AM
Thanks for raising awareness of wood burning harms @johnwhitbymp.bsky.social PM2.5 & BaP emissions from deadly "modern" stoves have devastated the health of neighbours in areas where we were previously protected by the Clean Air Act.A tiny numer of people (<1m) causing> PM2.5 than ALL power stations
October 3, 2025 at 12:27 PM
“Ecodesign” stoves, bonfires, charcoal BBQs and firepits are the main problem in cities now. They cause ~800 tonnes of PM2.5 in London every year. ULEZ savings are 23tonnes/year. A bonfire in a garden can cause similar PM2.5 levels in neighbours homes to wildfire smoke miles away.
September 14, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Still no comment from you on Benzo[a]pyrene emissions? We are expected to tolerate high levels of this toxic carcinogen less than 2m from our windows so that the stove industry can profit from polluting the air in cities. Modern stoves burning "Ready to Burn" wood are proven to be largest UK source
September 13, 2025 at 3:21 PM
@eddavey.libdems.org.uk's constituency is full of homes churning out toxic woodsmoke yet have solar panels on their roof and EVS on drive. #Surbiton is worst place in UK for air pollution according to an IQAir study. “Ecodesign” stoves are used by <1m people, yet pollute more than ALL power stations
September 9, 2025 at 9:11 AM
And they don't cut ALL emissions by "90% vs open fires", that is cherry picking! For the known carcinogen Benzo[a]pyrene "modern" stoves (i.e. those permitted in SCAs!) are the largest emission source in UK.
September 9, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Air pollution is intrinsically linked to climate change and wood burning appliances are the largest emission source per user in the UK by a huge amount. “Ecodesign” stoves now emit 1.8X more PM2.5 than power stations (incl Drax) & an average “Ecodesign” stove emits PM2.5 >64 average car exhausts
September 9, 2025 at 9:05 AM
This is outrageously irresponsible! Come on ‪@greenparty.org.uk @zackpolanski.bsky.social @sianberry.bsky.social please take a stand on this as many of your members have fallen for this despicable misinformation that has ruined the AQ of communities and devastated the lives of vulnerable neighbours
September 9, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Please look at NAEI data for 2023 @joshjackman.bsky.social Burning dry wood or “Ready to Burn” doesn’t make it “as environmentally friendly as possible.” Many emissions are worse for “modern” stoves burning dry wood eg Benzo[a]pyrene. So emissions are different, not better.
August 28, 2025 at 8:08 PM
Is it the magic chimney fairy again? WP3 report states: “To consider further testing on modern Ecodesign appliances to understand why emissions of certain pollutants appear to be elevated compared to older technologies.” Surely its obvious that less ash means more flue emissions? Eg BaP
August 8, 2025 at 7:36 AM
Yes, but that's not because of "Ecodesign" stoves. Wood burning is the only source that is increasing. Reduction in 2020-2022 is more likely to be thanks to high profile clean air campaigns focussing on wood burning, such as clean air night, etc. You know - the ones the SIA try to silence.
