I've said it before, but "meta era" is a terrible name for the 2010s Sonic games. The humor in those games wasn't really "meta" or self-aware. Pontaff was mostly orky dad jokes.
Sonic *Boom* was a very meta show, but its sense of humor was very different from the games.
