Our Introduction to Oceanography class took a 5-day field trip to The Ocean, visiting some spectacular spots near Big Sur and Monterey. Some major storm systems battered the coast while we were there, so the weather was.... epic. But so was the geology, biology and oceanography 🙂.

Today we celebrated the newly reinstated Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) Laboratory with an open house. Prof Francisco Apen, Lab Manager Gabe Epstein, and undergrad Freya Robson gave us a tour. This facility will enable lots of great science!

A couple of SES undergrad and grad classes have recently ventured to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado to learn about fundamental geological processes that have shaped this spectacular range. The fall foliage wasn't bad either :)

Last summer, NAU SES researchers collected ancient tundra plants uncovered by vanishing Brooks Range glaciers in Alaska. These fragile moss specimens provide evidence of when glaciers last advanced, creating a rare archive of Arctic climate history that is disappearing as the ice melts.

New paper alert! New research from former NAU PhD student Emerson Lynch, SES Prof @rengellia.bsky.social , and colleagues demonstrates that some upper plate faults in the Cascadia subduction zone are very active, with important earthquake hazards implications. Check it out! #nau_geology

SES PhD student Grace Ward has been participating in a research cruise in the Tonga-Samoa area to pick up ocean bottom seismometers that have been deployed on the seafloor for 20 months recording earthquakes. They picked them all up! #nau_geology #saloongeo sites.google.com/msu.edu/salo...
