Grateful for the opportunity to present my postdoctoral research in the Mennill Lab at #AOS2025 on vocal behaviours of Rufous-and-white wrens in the presence of an owl predator near and far from the nest.

It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. 🐦🎶🦉

Last April, we nano-tagged Swainson's Thrush in Monteverde, 🇨🇷 to contribute to understand their migration pathways.

This is part of GDFCF @gdfcf.bsky.social BioAve project

We detected them by our Motus stations at Área de Conservación Guanacaste and in their way North. @birdscanada.bsky.social

Song-type switching was not affected by the local density, contrary to what we originally expected.
Local density modify the vocal behavior or birds (4/5)

Males sang at higher rates when the local density increased. Females showed a similar pattern in singing rate. However, the effect was marginal. Duet rate did no change.

We used an innovative experimental design to increase the apparent local density of conspecific territorial neighbors using programable speakers in the field. Wren illustrations by Caleb Sequeira-Ulate (2/5)

We highlight two existing experimental designs, and we propose a new playback-based experimental design, to study conspecific density and avian vocal behaviours. We argue that more research on this topic is needed.

In our review, we found 19 published studies of birds that included data on vocal behaviour in relation to the number of conspecific neighbours. Only a few birds were tropical 🌴. Only a few involved studies of female birds ♀️.
