Assistant city editor, Santa Fe New Mexican. Politics reporter in Arizona and Idaho before that. Every calculation based on experience elsewhere fails in New Mexico.
I came up with a theory during that World Series that if the Cubs won Trump would win, based on who in what states would be most unhappy plus a general sense that weird things happen in groupings.

I’m not saying I was right but I’ve heard worse theories explaining 2016.

I just watched Death by Lightning and seeing the “treatment” Garfield got after he was shot really drives that home.

I used to drink those sometimes too a surprising number of bars in NYC have them as their cheap option. My friend from Rhode Island called them Nasty-gansetts.

One of my less favorite cheap beers it’s got too much of a strong taste. Ones like Utica Club or Lone Star at least go down easy.

I don’t think it’s bad in itself to have some non-journalists on this kind of panel — sometimes outsiders see things we don’t and have valid criticisms based on those perspectives — but this one seems stacked toward people who are just going to turn it into a boring political argument.

Haha we called them that too. Went through a phase where it was my go-to cheap beer.

Utica Club is the other one I miss, when I was in the Albany area last year I found a bar that was selling it for $2 a can. Been a while since I paid that little at a bar.

Now I need to know what baby-eating restaurants in Denver Facebook AI suggests.

I no longer live in a part of the country with Stewart’s Shops but when I lived in New York they made this really cheap beer that was like $12 a case. Did the trick as long as you drank it fast enough to not give it a chance to warm up.

I get the sense it gets wrapped into other culture wars issues. Republicans in Idaho used to scare monger that Idaho would turn into Portland or Seattle if you legalized weed. And the handful of more libertarian types who used to favor looser marijuana laws don’t talk about it much anymore.

One of my more psychotic beliefs is it should be legal to punch people who are obviously cheating at bar trivia. Put your damn phones away!!!

I’m not going to dignify this by sharing the link but the “bizarre detail” is there’s a black man and an Asian woman in a crowd shot.

I didn’t realize Chester A. Arthur was such a thug although it makes sense given the political machine he came up in. Apparently he really was something of a drunk too.

One minor detail that bugged me is the cursing seemed too 21st century. I doubt Roscoe Conkling ever said “motherfucker.”

I think the timing of the decline of the Mafia just as regular crime was increasing played a role. Fed into a belief (boosted by movies like The Godfather) the mob had been keeping a lid on street crime. In the bad old days in NY it was common advice to look for apartments in mobbed-up neighborhoods

Send me the shortest version (I suspect 2,500 is too long but they can probably work with something under 2,000) and I’ll check with them on Tuesday. Email’s nbrown at sfnewmexican dot com.

That’s too long for our opinion page (most pieces there are 700-ish words) but we do have a teen page that runs longer essays and the topic sounds like something they’d like. I can check with them if he’s interested. Not sure how they’re situated now but they’re usually looking for writers.

How long is it?

I’ve spent enough time in bars in eastern Idaho to agree with this.

I thought he was a strict Catholic, said so himself.
