My thinking is similar.
I suspect one of the reasons why Starmer won't commit to another referendum to begin undoing the damage done by Brexit is that to do so opens the door to another referendum on restoring Scotland as an independent country .

In Scotland voters increasingly dislike right wing politics. In stark contrast, voters in England remain very attracted. In 2024 only 20% of voters chose a right wing party in Scotland, compared with 41% in England.
And England always gets to choose who rules in Westminster.
