I have been dealing with MAGA labor market data denialism so long that I forgot about woke labor market data denialism, welcome back 2021 twitter discourse
a series of tweets. In the first one, I say "NEW JOBS DATA: Non-farm Payrolls: +227k Unemployment Rate: 4.2% (+0.1%) Prime Age (25-54) Employment-Population Ratio: 80.4% (-0.2%) Average Hourly Earnings: +0.4%" Someone replies "missing: wage data Hint: It's bad" I reply "??? average hourly earnings are wages" they reply "salaried positions being replaced by seasonal jobs at Amazon does not equal an increase. That math doesn't math." I reply "I am showing you the data saying wages are up? That's the math? meanwhile warehousing employment has been falling or stagnant for like three years at this point" someone replies "this guy FREDs" Another person replies "how many are second jobs? how many are thirds? what about gig work? Those metrics don't tell the real story" I reply "5.3% of people have multiple jobs, which is about normal historical levels for the US. Also all of the "non farm payrolls" data are formal employment, not gig work" Someone else replies "statistics are like a bikini what they show is interesting what they hide is crucial"
