you'll find different OSs in the form of "distributions" all based on the linux kernel (which interacts with hardware, manages resources and processes, etc.) distros often abide by different philosophies (debian = only free and open source software supported, arch = freedom to configure ones system to their specific needs at the cost of "general user-friendlyness"). distros come with different package managers, e.g. APT or pacman, which are the main way of installing software on linux systems. they connect to their distro's central package repositories. things like desktop environments, window managers, file explorers etc. are interchangable. popular DEs include gnome, xfce4, kde, cinnamon, mate, or lxde, and they all look and behave differently. you're usually given an option to choose one when downloading a distro or while you're in the installation process. if you care about online gaming, be wary that any games with kernel based anticheat will not work on linux because of security reasons. most other games are okay to play at this point because of the wonderful work of valve. their compatibility layer, proton, works wonders and i've not had any problems playing windows games. the usual recommended "beginner distro" is linux mint. the default version uses the cinnamon DE, has lots of themes and goodies pre-installed, and has a GUI "app store" alongside the terminal package manager. the arch wiki is a great resource for all things linux in general. i can recommend ExplainingComputers on youtube for install guides and other videos on the topic. this is a bit all over the place but i hope it's a good starting point!
