In September of 2012, Sheila and I had this conversation.👇

I have a MAC laptop and the battery is bulging. So my middle daughter (the one with Down syndrome) tells me:

"I know why it's bulging."

Me: "Why?"

Sheila: "Because there's an apple in there."

Bahahahaha. Why didn't I think of that?

After the first few such stunned greetings, I wanted no more visitors.

Then I learned to say while wearing the biggest smile on my face, “This is our gorgeous second daughter, Sheila.”

For several years I visited new parents of babies with Down syndrome.

The first thing I would say when I met their new baby was, “Congratulations, your baby is beautiful.”

Why?

Because that was the thing I most longed to hear when I introduced my middle child to folks that came to visit.

If I could go back and tell my youthful self... Oh wait... I did this. If I could go back and tell my daughters this...
