It's also worth mentioning that they basically took ideas from anyone who had them. There wasn't really time to vet things. They threw everything they had at the wall, and it turned into something incredibly unique.

It's been confirmed that they took real concerns of the devs and put them into NPC dialogue (including the "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" line). I think this is why the game captures the feeling of dread so well. It's a reflection of what was actually going on during development.
