you are so obviously correct on this!

i think i was referring to the old video editing platform "video toaster" and imagining it's aesthetic modified to have a stronger influence from the memphis group (which is now widely disdained due to the proliferation of "corporate memphis"

it looks really good, with that minor exception!

great show! do you know of any way to get the AIs to ensure that text stays within the boundary of boxes in these flow diagrams?
March 6, 2025 at 6:27 AM
yeah that's an important case to consider - not trying to be pedantic, but you could conceivably imagine a model developing circuits under optimization pressure that implement some data structure that allows for compressed storage or more efficient (log N) look ups

I dont think he could do the laugh

Does the model develop "circuits" that cause memorization to become more efficient as the training process proceeds?
February 22, 2025 at 4:09 AM
there is this vague story that doing gradient descent weight updates will "write" the memory to the model in a form where it can be accessed by the forward pass.
February 22, 2025 at 4:09 AM
I agree wholeheartedly - (on memorization) - that said it seems like the process and mechanism of memorization is very poorly understood -

interesting study, i think i see what they are saying, but it just raises a lot of questions: noone ever gave a single roman an iq test - what was the literacy rate in the roman empire? what exactly does it mean to lower the average iq of an 85-90% illiterate population by 3 points?

can't wait to see what they come up with? sounds like an exercise in futility - with few exceptions - actual large scale fraud is more like an adversarial example - like the way that tax shelter schemes are legal

mitpress.mit.edu/978026252112... I really like this very old formulation of it - it sortof leaves me with the bias that "agency" is a kindof illusion..

do you see any progress on getting digital publishers to cryptographically sign the content that they serve? sortof like https but with signatures?
December 2, 2024 at 11:42 PM
no I just mean like a mathematical formalization of the problem - i think it would do much to clarify the role of culture vs individuals in world history
December 2, 2024 at 11:40 PM
that's indeed a good and famous guess, but I wonder what a more well-posed formulation of this problem would look like: suppose that there was a set of ignorant autonomous "human-like" agents left in the world in total ignorance - what single piece would most accelerate their growth?
December 2, 2024 at 11:16 PM
bingo - now do you think JvN really couldn't figure that out?
