People are roasting this lede, but NYM is actually correct to print it. Toilet paper is so scarce in prisons that it is sometimes used as a currency.

It shouldn't be restricted, for any person, but the fact that it isn't for her (and her alone) is a sign of extremely special treatment.
Apparently, Ghislaine Maxwell is living it up in prison with unlimited toilet paper. Here’s what we know about her alleged special privileges at her new federal prison camp in Texas.

Ironically you can see this very dynamic in the Epstein emails themselves, where the power elite all email each other absurd rumors and semi-literate political scuttlebutt and theorizing. The boys’ club exposed in those messages is the same one that controls the brains of the top Times editors.

Ultimately the problem is this: the paper is controlled not by scrupulous reporters but by a clique of Leonhardt types, who surround themselves with chattering class nitwits, cogitate on the news mostly through insular group chats and similar, and always think the GOP has at least half a point

I’m fine conceding that a bunch of nebulously incriminating Epstein statements do not a story make, but in that case neither does the Biden Parkinson’s nonsense, or literally any component of the various Clinton/Wikileaks pseudo-scandals, or tons of other right-wing stuff the paper has laundered

It’s clear when the paper’s Politics Knowers think something is important, journalistic standards are no obstacle. They find a way to get that thing on the front page nonstop, whether it’s “reporting the controversy,” repeating right-wing info dumps, or meta-coverage of how it’s affecting politics

I actually think this is a fair point and it’s hard to know precisely what you’d publish out of these emails. It’s just maddening in comparison to the NYT’s willingness to absolutely obsess over scurrilous rumors about Biden dementia, Clinton email non-scandals, etc.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.

Well MacArthur must feel extra proud today
Ugh.“Epstein’s donations to scientific researchers were unlikely to have exceeded a few tens of millions of $, Science mag estimated in 2019. Epstein told the magazine in 2017 that he favored ‘rebel’ scientists & criticized institutions such as the MacArthur Foundation as too ‘politically correct.’”
“‘The Epstein affair brings to light a much larger problem,’ [Naomi] Oreskes wrote [in 2020]. ‘It undermines the integrity of the research enterprise when individuals can pick and choose lines of inquiry that appeal to them simply because they can pay for them.’”

I don't think we talk enough about the fact that what underpins their belief is a corruption of the bible - prosperity gospel. They think because they are rich , they are blessed by god.

also for people who are going to say, I'm saying they aren't really christian - I'm not. /1
Like the Koch brothers and other conservative billionaires, Dunn and Wilks want to slash regulations and taxes.

Their endgame, however, is more radical: not just to limit the government but also to steer it toward Christian rule.
