It could take decades to recover from where we are.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

Fix the Court, no amendment needed: Every circuit judge is now also a SCOTUS justice, and all current justices assigned to a circuit. SCOTUS cases heard by panels of 13, one judge from each circuit, selected randomly. Cert granted or denied by different random panels of 13.

European reaction to the new American national strategy document
The headline, the main takeaway from a European viewpoint is this:

The transatlantic relationship as we know it is over. Yes, we kinda knew this. But this is now official US White House policy. Not a sppech, not a statement. The West as it used to be no longer exists.

The new National Security Strategy is a propaganda document, designed to be widely read. It is also a performative suicide. Hard to think of another great power ever abdicating its influence so quickly and so publicly. It will be worth following the reactions around the world, not just in Europe.
Trump's national security strategy is out and some of the Europe sections are shocking. "...the growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed
gives cause for great optimism."

It isn't the worst part, but it is the most humiliating part that he isn't even interesting. People say he's funny but I've never experienced that. He is intolerable, but not fascinating. There is nothing to think about there. He is a horrible, stupid animal and we let him rule us. We allowed it.

I was so annoyed by all the people posting this back in 2016. No better way to tell me you’re an absolute dullard if you think the art is gonna be good.
People said at least the art would be good but it hasn't been. Not better than it would have been. Often worse. There is nothing to engage with. There is no beauty, not even interesting ugliness. Just a decade plus of wasted time and energy.

What's changed is that the Court has become more transparent in its corruption. There's not even an argument here beyond the implicit one which is: how do you expect us to hold the House without those seats?
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

The three Democratic appointees, in an opinion by Justice Kagan, dissent.

I'll post the ruling shortly.

No satire in the history of film and television has ever been this on the mark.

The official policy of the Trump Administration is ignorant bigotry. We’re asked, under principles including charity, to assume that people support the administration despite that policy, not specifically because of it. I am increasingly unwilling to extend that charity.

Anyone who ever publicly uttered “genocide Joe” in the lead up to Election 2024, helped Trump win.

Our 2-party system is far from perfect—but it’s a 2-party system nonetheless.

It’s a zero sum game; hurting one party inherently helps the other.

Calling him “genocide Joe” helped Trump.

Happy now?

the linked article about a rural community's medical clinic closing ends with a coffee shop owner proposing that the solution is to find a doctor to make house calls.

this is where the stuff about "engaging Trump voters" runs into the reality that a ton of these people are completely delusional.
Something notable in this article is how much the life long locals don’t seem to give a shit. Which was an entirely predictable outcome if you've spent any amount of time among people like this
How life changed in a rural town in Virginia that lost its sole health clinic after the passage of Trump’s megabill. The residents voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024, and now they’re suffering for it.
