One thing that stood out: the only official pushing a hard line on urgent disarmament of the Palestinian resistance was the representative from the Saudi Foreign Ministry. That official, Dr. Manal Radwan, a Minister Plenipotentiary, warned there must be no “redefining” of what disarmament means under the UN Security Council–backed plan and dismissed debates over logistics, what she called the “who, what, when.” Her position directly clashed with Norway and Turkey, both of whom warned that forced disarmament up front is fundamentally unrealistic. Norway’s foreign minister said it is “very unlikely” there would ever be consensus for an international force to physically disarm Hamas against its will, stressing that any weapons process must be Palestinian-led and politically sequenced. He warned that if the “who, what, when” is not settled quickly — with governance institutions and a monitoring force put in place first — the ceasefire will collapse back into war and “total anarchy.” Turkey’s foreign minister was even more blunt: “We should not expect from the ISF work that has not been completed by the Israeli security forces.” He explicitly dismissed disarmament as the ISF’s first task, saying decommissioning of arms can realistically only occur after ISF establishes a security presence between the two forces, governance structures are restored in Gaza, aid begins to flow unrestricted, and there is some normalization of civilian life inside Gaza.

In its bid to become the "natural party of government" (whatever that actually means), Labor has filled the policy arena usually taken up by Liberal Party thought bubbles. Recent examples include, but not limited to - what if we revolutionised work and society with new technology but didn't regulate it? What if we had environment laws that made it easier to approve mining projects? What if we had donation reform that locked out independents and minor parties from election funding? What if we gave billions and billions for an insecure, no-guarantees defence deal but paid for it by shredding the social contract and cutting NDIS funding? Labor has the space to do what it wants - and what it wants, apparently, is to be the Liberal Party of the 1990s.
