MultiTrophic interactions in a forest biodiversity experiment in China - www.bef-china.com - DFG research unit - plant & animal lovers - ecosystem functioning
@bgauzens.bsky.social gave a very nice introduction into food web theory, from its origins until today! Covering Euler, social and railway networks, and many more. Fascinating!

Dominique Gravel from University of Sherbrooke explained how to predict the effect of species loss on ecosystem functioning in complex systems. #redundancy vs #complementarity. What a pity, he could not be with us in person!

Today at @idiv-research.bsky.social Feilong Ji showed responses of tree diversity on pre-disersal seed redation for several tree species in BEF-China - great progress 😊

Haikuo Zhang convinced us: Microbes are key! They mobilize P and P mobilization increases with tree diversity.

Georg Albert, our synthesis postdoc, shiws how species interactions shape (multi) functions in the BEF-China experiment.

The saprophytic insects of BEF China and how this group is affected by tree species loss. Great work of our PhD student Matteo Dadda.

Joshua Spitz shows the importance of canopy cover for ant-nutrient networks 🐜🐜🐜.

Our MSc student Kai Zhang shows us influences of lignin with herbivore functional diversity 🐛 👍

@entomassi.bsky.social explains how tree diversity influences parasitism of bees and wasps using long-term trap-nesting data in BEF China.

Mareike Mittag showed that the loss of redundant species reduces herbivory more strongly than the loss of distict species.

Excellent keynote talk by Yi Li showing eg that multidiversity is more important in forests than in grasslands @treedi.bsky.social

We are just starting our @treedi.bsky.social and #MultiTroph joint conference. 😊. Stay turned 🎄🌲🌳🎄🌳🌲

The start of a hopefully successful week of collaboration and research exchange 🔥 at our joint conference of #TreeDi 🌳and #MultiTroph 🐜🪲🕷 at the #idiv, Leipzig.

Tree diversity is often not the main variable structering higher trophic levels or only at specific stages of forest succession. Our PhD student Joshua Spitz showed that increasing canopy cover (not tree diversity) structures litter ant communities with less predators/predatory traits. #ECTC2025

Host-parasitoid networks are structured by tree species richness, tree phylogenetic diversity, and canopy cover. New study led by our Chinese partners #MultiTroph published in elife.bsky.social

Now we also see that wood decomposition is linked to tree diversity, presented by our hard-working Matteo Dadda #ecte2025 #Mulitroph. Well done Matteo!

Lots of interests in our long-term trap nest data presented by the the great @entomassi.bsky.social showing when, after forest planting, tree diversity become a dominant factor for wasp abundance and their parasitoids #ecte2025 #MultiTroph

We're starting our journey on #Bluesky! 🚀☁️ Excited to connect and share our newest findings on the importance of multi-trophic communities for forests and their functioning! :) #insects #biodiversity
