This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio.

In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory.

CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil.

🧵 Awful awful massacre in Brazil
Gente, é o maior massacre no Brasil desde o Araguaia.

The trick on Bluesky is

- DO NOT argue with sockpuppets, burners, bots, or otherwise ill-intentioned accounts with 5 followers, nothing good can come from it

- DO argue with actual people with 5 followers because you have something emotionally that makes you do it, this is poster’s code

While all the points he makes are also true, I want to push back specifically on the "controlling their behavior" point. Controlling other people's behavior is what all of society and societal expectation is built on. People only claim it as an issue when they secretly agree with the behavior.
"You just want to control their behavior!"

Nah, I simply don't want folks who are okay sitting down with nazis anywhere near my social circle. Priorities, y'know?

This is an easy decision for me. Why is it so difficult for you?

It's very telling that to liberals without commodification land simply could not be used.
Look, "better" is subjective but you really can't convince me that most people would consider life "better" as a hunter-gatherer
As an anthropologist, if the only thing I ever did all day was remind people that before the privatization and commodification of land humans had way more free time and peace of mind, it would still not do a dent in how deep this myth has burrowed into people's colonized minds like a parasite

Americans are the most propogandized people on earth to the degree that they'll make more propaganda in their own if the truth doesn't market well
Personally, I think "the United States was founded on genocide and the expropriation of indigenous land, built by slaves, and created a system of racial oppression in the South that inspired the Nazis" is an unequivocally true statement, but it's not great messaging.

It's kinda weird to start a thread about misinformation based on implicit association with a soviet propaganda poster that has nothing to do with the thread but is used to imply the examples below are like the soviets. I mean really how is an east german may day poster at all related?
I was tangentially involved in a misinformation project recently

What's interesting is that some of the most effective misinformation and propaganda works through making associations without being explicit, being selective about facts, slanting, and then repeating until you open the door

This is why I like AOC, she's willing to lie to Idahoans to not hurt their feelings
AOC: I was watching earlier today on TV, someone was saying, “Why are AOC and Bernie going to Idaho?”

I’ll give you one simple answer: It’s because you matter

Theres a special hell for American veterans too. It's expensive enough that they opened offices on earth called "the VA"
There’s a special place in Hell for draft dodgers who fire Veterans… and steal their benefits.

Just thought that needed to be said.

Will Stancils on a roll this week. I might have to take back what I've said about him.
No, it’s Trump’s fault, and the fault of his army of Nazi bigots, who explicitly build their politics around tormenting the weak for fun. Trans people were simply the most vulnerable target. After they’re gone any of you might be next. None of this repulsive apologia, fight back

"algorithms...give institutional actors a degree of plausible deniability" This entire article just exists to encourage that. Algorithms perpetuate inequality because that's what their creators designed them to do. It is the malicious intention behind it that we must stop, not the tool itself.
“But algorithms aren’t just being used to feed you content. They’re also employed to fix real-estate prices, make probation and asylum decisions, determine Uber prices during a hurricane, dictate whether elderly people receive potentially lifesaving medical care…”

The list goes on

Kantian ethics are fun because they are basically useless in all but the most basic of moral dilemmas but simultaneously the internet would be improved by 1000% if you were forced to ask yourself "should everyone be treated like this" before starting an online argument.

I strongly agree with their point that we should treat Biden like we do Trump. An incompetent asshole only out for his own glory at the nation's expense.
100% accurate.

Harris lost because Biden lives to give Israel bombs to kill kids with. If we must discuss who is making an immoral choice here then it would be good to look for whose hands are dripping with the blood of innocent's.

i will be furious for the rest of my life at the politicians who spent 4 years (correctly) yelling about what a terrible threat trump posed and then looked at january 6 and said "let's move past this quick as possible and hope he leaves public life on his own so we can do an infrastructure bill"

Reading my way through Ways of Seeing right now and just finished the chapter that created the idea of "male gaze" and didn't realize that's where it came from. I think that the way Berger discusses it is considerably more interesting and nuanced than the modern interpretation.
