Not all men-at-arms were of noble birth

Many men-at-arms of the later Middle Ages were not permitted to bear coats of arms. The English crown, for example, increasingly policed heraldic entitlement to prevent impostors and reserve armorial privilege for those of gentle or officially granted status.
