Delighted to be back in Institut Pasteur de Dakar for the kick-off of our EDCTP3 supported PvSeroRDT consortium. We will develop a new diagnostic test for detecting P. vivax malaria hypnozoites and set up manufacturing capacity with Diatropix in Senegal.

Enormous thanks to our Senegalese hosts 🇸🇳

Beautiful study of primaquine treatment to prevent vivax malaria relapses from Jean Popovici's team from Pasteur Cambodia.

The study is special because patients were moved to a non-endemic part of Cambodia, excluding reinfection from msoquitoes.

With colleagues from @pasteur.fr, we ran a case-control study of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 (omicron) in Paris.

We found Abs correlate with protection in serum (known for a long time) but also in saliva (obvious, but rarely demonstrated).

We expect large proportional reductions in low transmission settings. When transmission is higher, we expect smaller proportional reductions (although there are more cases to prevent).

When PQ adherence is low, there's a benefit to switching to TQ.

New work from Conni Ciavarella estimating effectiveness of primaquine and tafenoquine against P. vivax malaria.

From clinical studies, we know PQ & TQ prevent relapses in treated individuals.

We used a model to assess the population impact of these drugs.

We even convinced Luminex to sponsor the event.

Happy to be spending a few days in Chantilly for the annual retreat of Institut Pasteur’s Department of Global Health. So many talented students and post-docs presenting work on epidemiology, anti microbial resistance, social science, modelling and more.

A real pleasure to see Maria Yazdanbakhsh today at Institut Pasteur’s Future in Parasitology meeting.

So much variation in vaccine-induced immunity between Europeans and Africans!
