Gimli's tracks are distinct for the right front paw scuff. I tried to use a skin protectant liquid on the sore it makes, and later learned I had glued his toes together; I felt really awful. Love that guy.

There is a concept in training of catching a behavior. We had inadvertently been doing this, and so he thought we wanted him to do the jump up which we had caught as "down" being the opposite of what we meant.
Using a new command and no more saying down when he jumped up, Much better now.

When Gimli would jump up in greeting we would say "down" repeatedly, trying to encourage him to stay down. Then when in a quiet room not when greeting I tried to get him to work on training. When I said "down", he looked at me pensively and then jumped up as if he was greeting.

This photo was at Olympic National Park over the summer. This looks all natural, but we spent months working on coordinating "paws up" and this was the one photo that caught the trio in position looking the same way.

It's tough to be better than nubbin.
