4) The question I most often ask is, 'What's running underneath this poem for you?' What’s the feeling, the meaning, the thing that you want to explore. The reader can’t know what's going on in your head unless you give them enough information to let them enter.

3) If you’re stuck or unsure, ask yourself, why do I want to write this poem? Then try to bring that into your writing. Ask yourself, can I open this up in a new way? Can I take it a bit deeper?

2) Poems thrive on small, specific details and they will help me imagine what you're thinking. A description of the pattern on a dog’s coat, the name of a tree or the shape of a child's fingernails can touch a reader's heart and make your poem vivid.

1) We sometimes hesitate to write or submit poems about what's happening in our lives, fearing it may be too domestic or even cliché. There is nothing clichéd about love and care work. This is the stuff of being human. I’m interested in that. Your unique perspective and voice will bring it to life.
