Was literally just reading this in the @dublininquirer.com yesterday. New estate leaking within months of residents moving in. The heroic private sector providing SuPpLY.
www.dublininquirer.com/residents-mo...
Residents moved out of new north Dublin housing estate to allow defects to be fixed
All 69 homes in Dublin 15 will be undergoing remedial work, according to Fingal County Council's chief executive, AnnMarie Farrelly.

Same and same!

(or if you did you squashed a family into it anyway because it was all you could afford)

You'd get people trading up to something bigger and/or fancier but I don't remember there being an idea that you'd buy a house only big enough for a couple.
November 13, 2025 at 1:52 PM
It's weird though because I don't much remember people back in the day starting off in really small places: my Mam still lives in the 3 bed my parents bought in 1970 in their 20s.

*to* build, damn you autocorrect

Sure how else will we support our giant metal pole industry.

@orla-hegarty.bsky.social had a similar thing about how there's an assumption that people will later "downsize", ignoring the fact that there are very few apartments available to buy and no lunatic is going to sell their house to piss the proceeds away on exorbitant rent.

It's the old "we* can't have better, don't even think about it, isn't this good enough" again. Don't want to be living on the streets? Look, it's got a roof. Sure it was the only thing that was viable for them the build. Be grateful.

*you

It all sounds very familiar. And that worked out really well the last time, right? Right?
November 13, 2025 at 12:51 PM
Yes, there's this weird idea that people will be happy to just keep buying/selling (and that negative equity will never happen/new homes of the appropriate size will be available and affordable). I am fortunate enough to have bought one (1) house and they will be taking me out of it in a box.
November 13, 2025 at 12:50 PM
THIS. It's just the same old "you have to get on the ladder" idea that after the crash had people stuck in/with tiny crappy flats in an area that they didn't want to live in.

JANE I HAVE ACTUAL WORK TO DO *is sucked in inexorably*
November 13, 2025 at 12:01 PM
Er, that was a "surely meeting me couldn't compete with the musical delights", not "it was terrible that we met", obvs.
November 13, 2025 at 8:20 AM
I concur! (Even if you did have to meet me)
November 13, 2025 at 8:04 AM
Still horrible, though, hope you feel better soon. Also falling over never feels particularly dignified.

I did get a seat last time I was there, presumably because the baby wasn't there to pack in the crowds.
