Still, this future isn’t inevitable. We describe ways empathic AI can instead strengthen kindness by helping people reflect, communicate support more clearly, and reconnect with each other. 🫶

At the same time, people may start offloading the act of giving empathy to AI once they see that AI can take over this effortful work. Without practicing empathy, people may begin to devalue it, losing both the motivation and skill to care for others.

People may start seeking empathy from AI because it’s always available, non-judgmental, and offers the exact kind of support they desire. However, when people rely on AI instead of others for care, they lose out on the mutual vulnerability and connection that real relationships depend on.
