Currently reading, Craig Bailey's "Irish London: Middle-Class Migration in the Global Eighteenth Century". Despite being an academic text, it's easy to read, and the bibliography is fantastic for anyone doing #Genealogy of the Irish and/or professions in this period.

Day at the archives yesterday reviewing a number of sources from the 1700s. One of these was the journal of a trainee doctor and "man midwife", with study notes on anatomy, and a journal of practice (births he attended). The image of conjoined twins was included in the practice section. #HistMed

X Marks the Spot
Fascinating code for non marital and extra-marital births in the parish of Newport, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. X for non-marital births and an X in a circle beside the names of those who have engaged in adulterous (extra-marital) relationships. registers.nli.ie/registers/vt...

A lovely way to spend my day (and not a drop of Guinness passed my lips!). Met some amazing researchers and archivists. #Genealogy #WomensHistory

#OTD 120 years ago my GM, Josie, was born. Orphaned at 5 and sent away to a convent in Limerick, she later immigrated and settled in the Liverpool area, forming a lifelong friendship with her employer, a doctor's wife. She returned to Ireland, married, and gave birth to 11 kids, incl. 3x twins

#Genealogy Census as political protest. Mr Joseph Adderley, a clerk in holy orders, living in Limerick, clearly had something to say about Queen Victoria based on his census return of 1901. Even the BMD Registrar refused his attempts to enter the names www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000...

I don't think so - but just googled picture of Long Hall interior - your partition looks the same. But Stag's Head has similar partition...

I went back to double check. Not the Alien Order I'm afraid; instead it was the Irish Travel Permit book (person b. 1909)

146 years ago today, my 2GGF died (Daniel O'Brien). Through newspapers and other records I've traced him through 3 Irish counties, and 6 parishes. The most surprising discovery was his photo in Bulawayo (now, in Zimbabwe). This memorial card preserved thanks to Kiwi 3Cs. #Genealogy #IrishGenealogy

It really is, especially since this is all that's left of it

#Genealogy A double 3rd cousin sent this photo of our GGMs' and 2GGM's birthplace (GGMs - Mary Anne and Eleanor; their mother Rose Anna b. c. 1830s). Ref 1901 Irish census, it had 6 rooms, 13 out-houses, and a cottage for farm labourers. In 1844 it was described as "rather old but in good repair"

Going through some old photos and found this one of a multi-generational family, c. 1890-1910s (I'm guessing based on the women's clothing). Since the photographer, J Henderson, operated from Patna & Maybole in Ayrshire, I presume that the family were also Scottish. #Genealogy #StormDay

That show came up in conversation last night with friends. I mentioned you recommended it to me ("Ah, well Ro won't steer you wrong!") and then I saw this just now. Have primed the brother for my next trip to Netflix land!

Banagher to Bulawayo #Genealogy Doing some digital housekeeping and rediscovered this memorial card from 1909. I hadn't forgotten about the photo taken on Daniel's travels to Africa c. 1890s #DigitalHousekeeping

A #Genealogy adventure through Ward maps, Sanborn Fire maps, neighbours in the 1870 census, cross-referencing various deeds, to confirm that yes, the Scranton, PA lot bought by "P" 1862 was bought by my P, and was the same address where he raised his family and where they lived for another 40 years

The Marriage Portion: In 1883, Mary Burke married John Burke, widower. The day before, they signed a detailed agreement, protecting Mary's £200 investment ("Marriage portion") against any foolishness on her husband's part. (Dooleys were his cousins) www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3... #Genealogy

Oh and even better, the bold Michael's will was proved in London so I now have a full copy, not just Gertrude's extract, thanks to UK National Archives!

Chuffed to discover (newly added paper) a description of my 2xGGF from 1843. Nominated as an arbitrator by the local Repeal Movement (against 1800 Act of Union). He was "honest, prudent, sensible", although I don't know whether he'd have qualified as a "wealthy, intelligent" person. #IrishGenealogy

Imagine being days (not hours) away from home and getting a letter telling you that your mother's heart is failing (rheumatism), and she might be lucky to get a year or two. That's the letter "Dearest Jack" Tully enclosed with his application for a US passport. #IrishGenealogy

Mary Lyons Dowden of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Descendants claim she was born in Co. Offaly, Ireland. But 1870 census b. Louisiana, 1860, 1880 & 1910 census b. NY, 1900 census b. Ireland... The only thing that's consistent in these records is that her parents were born in Ireland. #Genealogy

John, Lizzie, Frank and Dotie Guinan left their home at the end of May 1904. "The partings, with many to meet no more, were most affecting." They arrived aboard the Cedric at New York on 10 June 1904 bound for cousin, Michael Cunningham, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. #Genealogy #IrishGenealogy
