You forgot one thing - it got stopped by the base of the support pillar. And quite effective.

And modern ship hulls are made of 5mm thick steelplates. Destroy the bow, rip it open, scrunch it up - as long as it gets deflected.

And that's exactly how they do it nowadays. It just was not "common" when they build the bridge - and they never added it later.

Example - Sunshine Skyway Bridge, FL with dolphins protecting the new pylons after the old bridge got hit by a ship:
