New paper out w @davidbritain.bsky.social & T. Blaxter: Using data from 50K speakers, we show that many once-distinctive English regional terms have sharply declined. So, having read the paper, it's quite intriguing and complex stuff and much more about attitudes and perceptions than actual use. The most recent figures about exclamation mark use are actually nearly 20 years old (Waseleski 2006) and this study doesn't measure use in the same way.
