The “market” is not a single entity. It doesn’t make decisions. Supplies will increase until the profits fall too low to warrant investment. If it is the case that no one can profitably rent housing that people can afford, then you should be addressing income distribution instead.

It isn’t a free market. Zoning, public transit and NIMBY activists along with general corruption in construction and permitting distort the market and limit supply. Impediments to supply need to be addressed. Rent controls have never led to long term increases in supply.

That's a reach. Every study I've seen and basic economics - supply and demand tells us that the net effect is a loss of housing units. Why would you invest in building new housing in a market so restrictive? I agree on collusion. That needs a remedy along with a whole host of white collar crimes

Also, improvements to mass transit - capacity, convenience and reach help because they make longer distance more tenable.

All true, but his specific solutions are bad. For example, rent control leads to less housing, not more. The solution to high rents is more housing. Rent controls, strict zoning and NIMBY are all contributors to high rents.

You’re much too kind. Russia is fighting for the right to commit genocide, kidnap, rape, torture and murder children, women and men. They murder, torture and castrate POWs. They’ve done these things in every town they’ve occupied which is why Ukraine cannot concede any of their country or people.

He says he is a socialist. Not all progressives are socialist. Most want a mixed economy where the most effective solution is chosen whether its market based or government implemented or directed.

Doesn't matter. "Democratic Socialist" uses the "Democrat" modifier to differentiate themselves from more authoritarian socialists. Still not a Democrat. Still a bad economic policy. BTW, don't assume I favor unfettered Capitalism because I don't, but many Socialist solutions make things worse.

Mamdani is not a Democrat. He’s a Socialist. I don’t support him either. If my choice is him or the disgraced former Gov or a Republican I’d vote for him, but that’s not an endorsement.
