The sound of water bombers right over our heads. I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s a sound that is simultaneously comforting and stressful. The kids find it novel, and I remember that it’s not normal.

How Dry is it in Nova Scotia? Did a quick analysis of the longest established local weather station.

It is the driest since summer of 1975. Interestingly dry summers were common in the early 20th century, but have now all but slipped out of living memory. #NovaScotia #AtlanticCanada

Driest Summers at Collegeville Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Station was established in 1916. Anomalies are relative to the 1990 to 2020 mean June 1 to August 12 rainfall of 220 mm. Years 1946 to 1948, 1951, 1964, 2010 are missing and are excluded. 2025 is the fourth direst summer on record.

As I do flood risk assessments for residents of particular places, I've considered neighbourhood flood water 'sinks' like this, but in most instances there's nowhere for it to go that is useful to those residents. Towns in NS have been developed with little to no capacity for storm water management.
