Bad writers think that being subversive and ironic is good writing. That and an all around distaste for anything that isn't their culture.

I mean the only reason why we don't have outlets calling Japanese characters gay anymore is because they can't get away with it now.

I genuinely feel like there has to be some sort of hardcore cultural difference that makes most western creators just unable to grasp what makes the honest sincerity of japanese creations so appealing.
It's like the idea of something being silly but sincere in its themes is just this alien concept.
