Bad writers think that being subversive and ironic is good writing. That and an all around distaste for anything that isn't their culture.

I genuinely feel like there has to be some sort of hardcore cultural difference that makes most western creators just unable to grasp what makes the honest sincerity of japanese creations so appealing.
It's like the idea of something being silly but sincere in its themes is just this alien concept.

people keep on saying the only problem with the netflix DMC is that it's not a 1:1 adaptation but like no, in a vacuum that shit sucks it just gets even worse when you know the character they spend most of their focus on is meant to be Lady from the Devil May Cry series
