It's v odd though that he credits these guys with changing so much, but doesn't mention the contemporaneous French directors of the cinéma du luc, who were also pursing this heightened visual style and were accused of no substance too.

I may have watched both Thomas Crown Affairs this weekend. I'm a fan of both films which have different strengths and are both outliers in their directors' (Norman Jewison, John McTiernan) filmographies. But Haskell Wexler's cinematography and Alan Levine's costume dept win the day for the '68 flick
