Rather beautiful in its way but didn’t make as big an impact on me as its reviews suggested it would. Some interesting thoughts about the human soul and technology but not ground breaking.

The house is patient, it can wait. It will have your soul in the end.

Claustrophobic and oppressive, not that you’d expect anything else from a novel written in 1945 about the German occupation of Athens. He’s excellent on the expression of interior life to the external world and the accidents of human communication.

Fun, irreverent and fresh fantasy with an interesting premise - what happens after the dark lord is defeated and you have to pick up the pieces. And for a change standalone rather than part 1 of a mega-series.

It was time to read a classic. Forster has such an odd style but his finely tuned analysis of love and desire is insightful and meaningful. Also moving for the view into his soul, and worthwhile even if it occasionally clunks.

A Complete Unknown is brilliant, as is Timmy C. Go see. Even my Dylan-loathing husband loved it.

I liked this, but I don’t have a lot to say about it. It’s Agnes Shakespeare and the family life behind the man - but it’s very much about them and not him. In particular it circles back and forward in time around Hamnet and his impact in their lives. Insightful and loving, and felt true.

A decent enough book about colliding art worlds, collegiate life and repressed sexuality, undermined by the main character doing a number of unrealistic things because he’s in a novel.

A high quality serving of the usual recipe from Richard Morgan - a hard-boiled sci-fi thriller with an uber-violent morally grey augmented human hero carving out social justice against a backdrop of brutal post-end-stage capitalism, this time on a partially terraformed Mars.

Every year I plan to post what I read and never keep it up, but let’s try again.

2025 started with this little known work of C20 literature, prompted by a Xmas rewatch of the films. It’s my 1st in 10 years, only the 2nd as an adult, and the 1st reading the whole thing intensely over 3-4 days.
