In honor of Veterans Day and the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Mount Auburn Cemetery is pleased to announce a new self-guided tour highlighting Revolutionary War veterans buried at Mount Auburn.

Today is the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. We remember the lives lost and the communities forever changed. Amid the storm’s devastation in 2005, one plant became an unexpected symbol of hope: the Peggy Martin rose. 🌹

Appreciation post for all the dragon 🐉 and damselflies 🌼 in our landscape and beyond.

In 2024 our citizen scientists visited various sites to document dragon and damselflies that were present at each location as a part of our Adult Dragonfly Survey.

One such historical figure, is the prolific landscape painter, Winslow Homer who was born in Boston on February 24, 1836.

She moved to Hollywood in 1940 and achieved a short but noteworthy career as a character actress, performing in 31 films in the 1940s. In 1944 Revere was cast as the mother of twelve-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet.

A champion of the anti-slavery and feminist movements, Hunt not surprisingly chose Edmonia Lewis to create her memorial. Lewis’ mother was an Indigenous American, and her father was a free Black man. In 1863 came to Boston, where she studied under Edward Brackett.

Commemorating the grave of physician, Harriot Kezia Hunt, stands her monument: "Hygeia" a sculptural treasure of Mount Auburn's funerary collection, carved by Edmonia Lewis in the early 1870's.

He never married and left no direct descendants. His memorial tribute was written by A. Piatt Andrew and published in the Gloucester Daily Times.

Sleeper was introduced to Eastern Point in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1906 by Harvard economist A. Piatt Andrew, who had built a summer mansion there called Red Roof. Captivated by the location, Sleeper purchased land nearby in 1907.

Recently, a photo from @historicnewengland of a delightfully decorated room at the Beauport Sleeper-McCann historic home went viral.

Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934) who designed this room and the entire Beauport property, is buried on Willow Avenue in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
