This isn’t really a change though. During the Civil Rights era, you could count on the local cops to beat black people, law and cameras be dammed.
the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

If SCOTUS wants to confess their venality and biases in print, let them. Quiet dignity gives some of us too much room to imagine they’re wise and impartial.
One of my Supreme Court reform takes is they should be completely barred from taking any outside income (incl. publishing deals) and it should be particularly frowned upon, normatively, to be writing books. Memoirs are for writing after you retire, not five years into a lifetime appointment.
