America's fate was sealed when it decided to steal people and then trick people from other lands to do its labor.

the insane way liberal donors think about media is a gigantic problem. meanwhile right wing donors are throwing wads of money at every wingnut with a wordpress
When we were starting Barbed Wire we were told by Courier funders that were “competitive with them”. Which, wtf, we’re all on the same side and need a million outlets, not one

Donald Trump just unilaterally bombed Iran. A masked gang is terrorizing our streets. America has rapidly devolved into an authoritarian state.

That's why, today, The Onion has purchased a full page ad in today's New York Times with a simple plea to Congress:

Sit back and do absolutely nothing.

I feel this in my soul every time someone says I should write a memoir. I've lived an interesting life, but I want to share my stories because I want to, not because I'm mining for views.

I was born in the US, but many of my friends weren't. At every turn in life, whatever I had to do - like applying to colleges - was ten times more difficult and expensive for them.
"In my experience, most native-born people have no clue what a complicated, expensive, nonsensical, and above all slow process it is. It still takes years, thousands of dollars, a gigantic pile of paperwork, and a lot of luck for regular people who do it all right." prospect.org/politics/202...
The Anti-Immigration Majority Is a Mirage
Americans gradually bought the Republican sales pitch on immigration. Then they saw what it looks like in practice.

I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy can’t mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. That’s the real test.

This is a weird self-praise, but I think since I have a low sense of self worth, I need to start focusing on good things.

I'm from the part of NYC that's 50% immigrants. That means I get culture shock in the very neighborhoods I grew up in. I wrote about after helping out with some events during Ramadan:

This is my mental health check via memory.
I hung out with a guy I was fond of, but I was in a constant state of stress and anxiety. I told myself that if the friend group didn't like me, I'd know.
After a winter break, he greeted me with a warm hug and "happy New Year." His smile was very genuine.

Lowkey kind of sad that I only get a couple weeks' reprieve this year because of the holiday slump, and all the pent-up creativity comes flooding out so I realize I can't write all I want to write. But we'll live.

This is my mental health check via memory.
When he's not anxious, my dog is sweet and smart. My old roommate had a dog as well. When she was playing with them in the yard, a tile fell out of nowhere and hit her. Her dog's first reaction was to run away. My dog's first reaction was to check on her.

My shimei got me a massage gun and a snack from a brand I was talking about.
My neighbor gives my dog treats and toys, even hangs them on my doorknob when I'm not home.
My landlord's cousin works at a cafe and handed me a giant muffin.
