How many Americans use food stamps? The numbers vary from month to month. But in May 2025, the most recent month with available figures, 41.7 million people received SNAP benefits. That works out to nearly 1 in every 8 people in the country. www.pewresearch.org/...

Texas A&M Requires Approval for Race and Gender Classroom Topics
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Texas A&M University System approved a new policy Thursday requiring professors across all 12 campuses to obtain presidential approval before teaching certain subjects related to race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Regents adopted the rule months after a viral confrontation between a student and an English lecturer intensified political scrutiny on the flagship university and its leadership. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The policy bars academic courses from “advocating race or gender ideology” without prior approval and defines those concepts as theories that assign inherent guilt, depict racial hierarchies, or elevate self-assessed gender identity above biological sex. System officials say the goal is transparency, not censorship, but faculty groups sharply disagreed, warning that the rule threatens academic freedom and could violate First Amendment protections. Rana Jaleel of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) said the change undermines core educational principles by restricting open inquiry. Several A&M faculty members, including AAUP chapter president Leonard Bright, urged regents to rehire lecturer Melissa McCoul, who was dismissed after a recorded dispute with a student over gender identity instruction. Her firing preceded the resignation of former university president Mark Welsh III, who faced political backlash from state leaders. Two professors spoke in support of the new rule, arguing it maintains academic standards rather than limiting debate. Regents said the measure is intended to ensure education “not advocacy.” The vote comes amid broader national and statewide pressure on universities over diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. --- Sources: * PBS NewsHour – MBFC Rating The post Texas A&M Requires Approval for Race and Gender Classroom Topics appeared first on News Facts Network.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore Presses Mid-Decade Redistricting in Response to Texas
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore doubled down Thursday on his support for pursuing mid-decade redistricting, arguing that states should not let President Donald Trump determine which parts of the country redraw their congressional maps. Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival, Moore said Trump’s efforts to encourage targeted states — including Texas, Missouri and North Carolina — to reopen their maps mid-cycle were driving a national political scramble. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); “Donald Trump decided to start picking and choosing which states should go through this process mid-decade,” Moore said, adding that states should not “sit on their hands” while partisan map changes unfold across the country. Maryland Democrats have pushed for a new congressional map that could potentially add a ninth Democratic seat, though the effort has been blocked so far by Maryland Senate Majority Leader Bill Ferguson, who warns a 9–0 map could face legal challenges. Texas Republicans triggered the current redistricting wave in August after approving a mid-decade map aimed at expanding GOP seats. California Democrats later passed a ballot measure circumventing the state’s independent commission to redraw districts in their favor. Moore said Maryland should not allow Republicans in other states to reshape the national landscape uncontested. Moore, who is running for re-election in 2026 and is often mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential contender, also criticized the recent congressional shutdown deal, calling it “deeply inhuman” to reopen the government without securing Affordable Care Act tax credit extensions. He said Democrats need to focus on delivering results — particularly on housing, energy capacity and rising utility costs — rather than fixating on messaging. “The Democratic Party has got to stop being the party of no and slow and start being the party of yes and best,” he said. --- Sources: * News From the States – MBFC Rating The post Maryland Gov. Nevada Supreme Court Restores Criminal Case Against Six Fake Electors
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Nevada’s top court on Thursday revived the state’s stalled criminal case against six Republicans who signed false Electoral College certificates claiming Donald Trump won the state in 2020. The decision ends a yearlong venue dispute that had paused one of the remaining fake-elector prosecutions in the country. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Attorney General Aaron Ford (D) initially filed charges in Clark County, but a lower-court judge dismissed the case last year, ruling prosecutors should have filed in Carson City, where the documents were signed. The Nevada Supreme Court disagreed, determining the alleged crime was completed only when the false certificates were received by a federal judge in Clark County. “Venue was properly laid in Clark County,” Justice Lidia Stiglich wrote, concluding the offenses “necessarily involved the receipt of the certificates” where they were mailed. The defendants — Nevada GOP chair Michael McDonald, Jesse Law, Jim DeGraffenreid, Durward James Hindle III, Shawn Meehan and Eileen Rice — pleaded not guilty to felony charges that carry penalties of up to four or five years in prison. All six were pardoned by Trump on Sunday, but Ford has emphasized the pardons apply only to federal offenses and “have no bearing” on state prosecutions. Ford said he will now resume the case in Clark County. The broader fake-elector effort sought to pressure former Vice President Mike Pence to certify alternate Trump-aligned slates in multiple battleground states that were won by Joe Biden, who carried Nevada by more than 33,000 votes. Several similar prosecutions in Georgia, Arizona and Michigan face uncertainty as prosecutors weigh next steps following recent court setbacks. --- Sources: * The Hill – MBFC Rating The post Nevada Supreme Court Restores Criminal Case Against Six Fake Electors appeared first on News Facts Network.

Georgia Election Deniers Claim DOJ Is Probing 2020 Fraud Despite No Evidence
ATLANTA, Georgia — Members of Georgia’s election denial movement have begun publicly claiming that the Department of Justice is reviewing long-debunked voter fraud allegations tied to the 2020 election, even though no evidence has supported the claims. The assertions mark the latest escalation in a broader national effort by Trump-aligned officials to shift the DOJ’s civil rights voting section toward investigations rooted in false claims about widespread fraud. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The newest allegation surfaced during an October 2 Georgia legislative hearing on the state’s possible withdrawal from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC). Mark Davis, a GOP consultant who routinely challenges voter registrations, told lawmakers an unnamed DOJ investigator had contacted him about allegations that hundreds of thousands of voters cast ballots after moving — claims state officials and courts have repeatedly rejected. It is the second recent claim from election deniers suggesting federal investigators are examining 2020 ballots. A separate unverified letter, allegedly written by Ed Martin — a Trump-appointed DOJ attorney and longtime defender of Jan. 6 rioters — demanded access to 148,000 Fulton County absentee ballots. The letter has not been authenticated, and the court and clerk’s office named in it say they never received it. Despite this, Georgia’s State Election Board — now controlled by a Trump-aligned majority — voted in October to subpoena the same ballots. One board member told local Republicans the panel is “communicating” with the DOJ, though the department has not publicly confirmed any investigation. Voting rights advocates warn the moves echo a nationwide push by Trump’s DOJ to gain access to unredacted voter rolls, potentially risking mass voter-purges ahead of the 2026 midterms. --- Sources: * The Guardian – MBFC Rating The post Georgia Election Deniers Claim DOJ Is Probing 2020 Fraud Despite No Evidence appeared first on News Facts Network.

Hobbs Tied with Leading GOP Challengers in New Arizona Governor Poll
PHOENIX, Arizona — A new Emerson College Polling survey finds Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) in a razor-tight race with multiple Republican challengers as she seeks a second term in 2026, highlighting the competitiveness of a state President Donald Trump carried by nearly six points last November. The results show Hobbs essentially tied in several hypothetical matchups, suggesting a volatile landscape heading into next year’s campaign. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In a matchup with developer Karrin Taylor Robson, Hobbs receives 43 percent support to Taylor Robson’s 42 percent, with 15 percent undecided — well within the poll’s 3.3-point margin of error. Hobbs also posts a narrow 44–43 percent edge over Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), with 13 percent undecided. Against Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), Hobbs leads 44–40 percent, slightly outside the margin of error, though 16 percent of voters remain undecided. Among Republican primary voters, Biggs is the clear early frontrunner, earning 50 percent support. Taylor Robson follows with 17 percent, and Schweikert sits at 8 percent, with about a quarter of GOP voters still undecided. The poll notes Biggs performs strongest with voters over 60 and among those who backed Trump in 2024. Voters rate the economy as their top issue at 34 percent, followed by immigration at 18 percent and threats to democracy at 11 percent. Hobbs, who narrowly defeated Kari Lake in 2022, is widely viewed as one of the most at-risk Democratic incumbents up for reelection. The survey was conducted Nov. 8–10 among 850 registered voters. --- Sources: * The Hill – MBFC Rating The post Hobbs Tied with Leading GOP Challengers in New Arizona Governor Poll appeared first on News Facts Network.
