It's in part because my parents wisely didn't worry about where we went to college as long as we went, but also because I didn't have good enough HS grades to get into someplace more elite.

Yeah, students do think and talk about the job market in fields they're considering, but I think it's often a debate (internal and/or with parents) between that and what they're really interested in. I've seen this with undergrads from lots of different backgrounds, US and international.
