Calgary's pro-housing movement
We are excited to host Mark Richardson of HousingNowTO for a presentation on affordable housing, and what Calgary housing advocates can learn from Toronto.

This will be a great opportunity to learn more about housing and connect with Calgary's pro-housing community.

Thanks to everyone who came out for Non-Market Housing 101!

We need to be saying yes... and to all types of housing. It was great to hear from those building affordable housing in our city.

Everyone agrees that Calgary needs more truly affordable, non-market housing. Why is it so hard to actually get it built?

Join us to learn more about the barriers to affordable housing, and how you can support these projects. (Snacks provided!)

An anti-housing lawsuit here in Calgary kinda gets the point by missing the point: Public hearings are not democratic and representative processes.

A self-proclaimed "fiscal hawk" might do well to heed a fundamental law of cities and realize that more homes across the city means the same services for lower taxes. (h/t

Even if we zoom in, many wards will see basically no change (1 in 100 homes changing).

For the councillors in these wards: Note the minimal impact locally compared to the benefit from increased homes across the city through lower taxes
February 15, 2024 at 10:04 PM
And if you add up the changes by ward, you can see the overall impacts are pretty darn small on the overall city-level scale:

Then, we did a simulation using weighted samples of yearly conversions. Basically we picked lots in the city at random based on the above scores and "converted" them to rowhouse builds.

After 10 years of change, here's how a higher scoring inner city neighbourhood might look

Using an estimate based on transit access, proximity to downtown, and community age , we scored each single detached/duplex lot in the city based on how attractive it might be to convert to a set of cute rowhouses.
February 15, 2024 at 10:02 PM
We used data from the city and their projected number of conversions from single detached/duplex lots to what we like to call "cute rowhouses"

Every Canadian deserves the dignity of a home.

Currently, policies at all levels of government are standing in the way of this.

Reshare if you think it's time to change the rules. #NationalHousingDay
