New York City went 12 days without a murder in November / December. That's tied for the longest stretch in history, according to the NYPD. As someone who was here when there were 6+ murders per day in this town, it continues to amaze me how safe the place is.

It says so, so much about where this country's at right now and has been over the past 20 years that we have a class of triggermen who don't think twice about committing murder with absolutely no legal justification and no fear of consequences.

One of the dilemmas of living through the second Trump administration is that saying these things out loud seems crazy. But yeah, the death penalty is an established, well-documented thing we have on the books for precisely these kinds of crimes; they obviously did it; and it's not hard to prove.
"the government should try, convict and then kill the secretary of defense for the crime he very obviously seems to have committed" seems like a radical thing to say, but -- no, it's not. it's the actual penalty for what pete hegseth, a man who ordered death squads to murder civilians, has done.

I call bullshit on people seeing Mamdani's outreach to Trump as savvy politics, but complaining about Gretchen Whitmer's. Haven't seen much ICE activity in Detroit, have we? Or am I just missing it?

It's not satisfying, but she's working to keep her constituents safe instead of on her 2028 hopes.

I mean, he's not wrong, but this doesn't strike me as wise messaging.
CNN’s Christiane Amanpour asked Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa where his “real allegiances” lie, given his “past of being a terrorist.”

Al-Sharaa, a fmr. senior figure in al-Qaeda’s Iraq network who later founded its Syrian arm in 2011, said that if a terrorist is “one who kills innocent...

You don’t need to be a socialist to know the network barons in Silicon Valley must have their wealth seized in the name of the people. They wield economic power as a cudgel against our liberal democratic rights.
A Palantir billionaire just called for public hangings.

“It's time to bring back masculine leadership to protect our most vulnerable,” writes Joe Lonsdale.

This is where Silicon Valley authoritarianism is heading:

the best thing about the lionization of the 'Monroe Doctrine' is that it was basically a bluff, there was no way the US could enforce it - and the British and the French intervened in the Americas loads of times in the 19th century without any real protest from the US

Nor could that boat, before it was bombed, reach the United States. That’s important because it refutes the laughable claim of “imminence” necessary to wrap the strikes under the auspices of a lawful armed conflict.
I cannot imagine the level of moral bankruptcy to describe the actions of people whose boat has just been hit by a missile from nowhere (this was the FIRST such strike) and who were most likely making a desperate attempt not to drown in the ocean as trying to "stay in the fight."
Q: What did you see in the second strike?

Cotton: "I saw two survivors trying to flip a boat -- loaded with drugs, bound for the United States -- back over, so they could stay in the fight."

The reason the tech bros went all in on Trump is because silicon valley has gone from one of the more government independent sectors in the 2000s to the most government dependent in the 2020s. Their grifts must be constantly managed with proximity to power.
