Another interesting fish from the Kem Kem - Bawitius! This is a 3m-long bichir, a group of fish I wasn't familiar with until starting this piece. Today, members of this group don't get more than a meter in length, and are apparently popular in aquariums!

I passed out some pdfs of this paper yesterday, but I'm thrilled to say that the Morrison Ankylosaur monograph is on line. Hopefully this will aid in folks needing Jurassic ankylosaur character states. giw.utahgeology.org/giw/index.ph... @utahpaleo-ufop.bsky.social @societyofvertpaleo.bsky.social

Quick sketch of Amphicyon confucianus (minus the fur) as it may have rested just before fossilization. A complete skeleton of this species exists (Shanghai Nat. History Museum has a photo of it), but it hasn’t been described as far as I know. #paleoart #sciart #miocene

I know the year is almost over, but maybe you have some time left before the holidays to squeeze in one more Hell Creek Formation paper?

New paper on a discovery from the Hell Creek Formation of North Dakota from an international team of researchers drops next week. Watch this space...

I don't know if its a sign of growth or a downward spiral that I now crash out when students directly and willfully ignore my advice because they like their pet theories more

my craziest take for researchers:
PLEASE keep backups of your publications somewhere! you never know when someone (me) needs to access a paper that is over 35 years old whose digital links have been broken.

I really want to see more fieldwork teams explore localities that aren't already well-documented. I could probably name at least 100 formations that are guaranteed to have wonderful discoveries if anyone was able to secure the grant money to actually put boots on the ground

it appears plagiorizer William Toosey tries his shit again, that's my Propalorchestes in his "Journey through the Cenozoic".
I suspect this is just the tip of it. Many of these are just other people's work with a new texture slapped on top.
Lots of JRC art here.

'Tis the season for graduate school applications, so here's a reminder that I'm recruiting! My lab uses a combination of fossils, statistical phylogenetics, fieldwork, & computational methods to study macroevolutionary dynamics in the marine biosphere. Check the link below & feel free to reach out

Doodles for Hong Kong 🇭🇰

In response to the tragic Tai Po fire, I'm doing charity commissions. Anyone who puts over £25/250HKD into "Feeding Hong Kong" or Hong Kong SPCA can request a coloured doodle of any prehistoric animal 🙏
