like when i say furry is queer, it's never my intention to exclude anyone, but rather to point out the reality that if furries are ever targeted by the law (an increasingly present threat), they won't spare the cishet furries. to me it's a call for solidarity more than anything

i've also heard a lot of people point to the fact that historically, making fun of furries is a socially acceptable way to be homophobic. "furf*g", pedophilic insults, focus on salacious rumors & made-up stories about our sexual depravity, degrading men for not performing masculinity "correctly" etc

in fact the broader perception of a group of grown adults dressing up in colorful animal costumes, nuzzling each other, drawing art of each other (much of which is pornographic) etc is that we're all too weird (too queer you might say) to be tolerated in "normal" society

like one of the things that really struck me abt the fandom was how openly affectionate men are with each other. obvs this is a good thing, & snuggling other men imo doesn't make you gay. but most people outside furry don't see it that way
