The single bed in their one bedroom home was cramped accommodating two fairly tall grown men and one rapidly growing boy. They discovered as he grew Knives couldn’t handle sleeping alone. If he didn’t sleep nestled safely between them both he spent most of the night plagued with nightmares. Once he recoiled from the prosthetic arm Vash reached out to comfort him and screamed and screamed until he was hoarse. screenshot of text: It was moments like those where Vash came the closest to seeing his brother again. He hated how a part of him longed for these glimpses of Knives’s fear and pain burrowed so deep in the heart of him it set him on a course of self-destruction. It was awful witnessing it on a young face Vash knew intimately, a face he stared at every day once, inside and outside of the mirror, but at least for the briefest moment Knives was truly alive. Then it’d pass and it was just Vash comforting a child possessed of a raw and primal fear he could not possibly understand. So Knives stayed in their bed. Legato, of course, had no complaints.

Shen Jiu woke in the same bed he had for many years. He stretched limbs carrying the same band of scarred flesh, faded with time, he slipped into clothes left neatly folded at the bedside, and sat at a table with a cup of tea with a curl of steam as he did every morning. Absently he contemplated how Luo Binghe calculated the perfect time to pour the tea and be gone before Shen Jiu roused from sleep. These first moments in the morning belonged to Shen Jiu. They ended the day together, slept together, but Shen Jiu preferred to greet the day alone. He used this bit of solitude to gather himself. After so many years, the scars he carried beneath the skin had faded less than the ones visible on his skin. He was no longer a respected peak lord but he was no longer a prisoner either. Shen Jiu’s life consisted of a cycle of lows and highs that would have broken lesser people at any stage, left them a broken thing. Shen Jiu rose above it, perhaps not for the better but he endured nonetheless. “Shizun is awake.” Luo Binghe entered, as he did each morning, at precisely the right time. He came offering breakfast he personally made himself. There were endless grumbling about Lord Luo neglecting morning court in favor of his former shizun but none were foolish enough to complain aloud. Shen Jiu inclined his head slightly then sipped his tea. He wasn’t easily swayed by this domestic sight. Luo Binghe had promised long ago he’d work diligently to earn Shizun’s favor and Shen Jiu held him fast to that promise each and every day.

Song Lan reserved the right to be pissed at starting his morning this way, especially on his day off, but he mentally took a step back and tried to see things from the stranger’s perspective. He relaxed his shoulders a notch or two then rubbed a hand down his face. “He was trying to jump out the window.” “A-Yang!” A-Qing crossed her arms. “Oh Xue Yang, I should have known…” Xue Yang bristled. He really reminded Song Lan of an alley cat. “You try waking up in a strange place after fighting behind a club the night before.” “There's no way you didn't reopen your knife wound,” A-Qing said with her head in her hand. She disappeared back into her room, likely to call Wen Ning again. Mo Xuanyu scurried in behind her in search of tissues for the bleeding. Song Lan needed a moment to himself. “I'll get him a glass of water.” So much for a relaxing morning off. Song Lan salvaged some of it by going for a two mile run as Wen Ning arrived to assess the damage Xue Yang caused to himself. He knew it made him sound like those obnoxious gymbro influencers but it really did help him get out of his own head for a while. He focused on his heart-rate, the feel of pavement under his feet, the wind hitting his face and everything else just fell away. He didn’t even listen to music. When he returned home, Song Lan had significantly less tension in his jaw and shoulders. That lasted until he walked into the living room. A-Qing, Mo Xuanyu, and Wen Ning all had varying degrees of unpleasant expressions. Xue Yang was the only one not staring at him. Song Lan had a gut-feeling he wasn’t going to like whatever they had to say next. “Da-ge,” A-Qing said softly, which was a warning sign of its own. “I’m not going to pretend you owe me a favor. Honestly, I owe you for putting me through school.” Yeah, this was real bad. “Tell me what you want.” Xue Yang shot him a glare at the bluntness in Song Lan’s voice. He had that hunched, tense posture of a feral cat backed into a corner again. He would have pushed himself off the couch if it wasn’t for Wen Ning blocking him. Despite how meek he appeared at times, Wen Ning had been an ER nurse for several years and was used to dealing with much worse patients. Xue Yang’s anger deflated a little but he still spat, “I don’t need this guy’s help.” Mo Xuanyu patted his leg. “A-Yang, I’m so sorry.” Xue Yang’s anger took another hit. “This isn’t your fault.” A-Qing jabbed a finger menacingly at Xue Yang. “You’re going to shut your mouth and let me handle this.” With all the tension he expelled during his run slowly creeping back in, Song Lan had enough. “A-Qing. What is it?” A-Qing abandoned any preamble and just said it directly: “He doesn’t have anywhere to stay right now.” Oh great. “Where was he staying before crashing on my couch last night?” “My place,” Mo Xuanyu chimed in. “But my roommate heard about the fight, she won’t let him stay there anymore.” Song Lan hazarded a guess with his prickly personality he didn’t have any other options or A-Qing would never ask what Song Lan knew she was asking. A thought struck Song Lan and he glared down at A-Qing. “Your summer break ends in two days.” A-Qing had the decency to look a little remorseful. “Da-ge, isn’t it better than any empty house?” You know that isn’t true, Song Lan said so loudly with his eyes she could hear it. Wen Ning closed his first-aid kit—he was well-aware Song Lan kept a fully stocked one in his home at all times but he didn’t want to presume—and headed for the door. “My s-shift starts soon. I’d appreciate it if Song-xiong looked after my patient. Please excuse me.” Wen Ning gave Song Lan an apologetic bow of the head on the way out. Quicker than he thought possible, Song Lan was minus one sister and plus one homeless alley cat.

His morning wasn’t any less chaotic. Song Lan rose early even on his days off. He woke with the sun as usual, dragging himself into consciousness feeling every bit of his own weight and every stolen minute of sleep as he did—this was not usual. He went through his whole morning routine in the master bathroom and trudged down the hall towards the kitchen. As he passed the living room, he caught sight of the bleeding stranger, no longer bleeding or sleeping, one leg hooked over the window. They stared at each other, both bleary eyed, frozen. The stranger reacted first, lunging out the window. He would have made a clean break if his foot didn’t catch on the windowsill, dangling dangerously above the ground. Song Lan swore, crossing the living room in two long strides and hauled him inside, the stranger struggling like a feral cat. “Have you lost your mind?” Song Lan shouted, forced to drop the stranger on the floor or be subjected to another elbow strike to the ribs. “Who the fuck are you? Where did you take me?” Xue Yang sat coiled at the wall, every bit a feral cat backed into a corner, ready to defend itself. “Did those second generation assholes tell you to kidnap me, you hulking freak?” A muscle in Song Lan’s jaw jumped. He was too tired for this. Song Lan pointed forcefully at the doorway. “You can leave whenever you want, just not out the window. I have no desire to explain to my neighbors why a bandaged stranger stumbled out of here like a thief.” “Hey, I didn't take anything of yours! I was trying to get the fuck out of here before whatever freak brought me here woke up.” “That's not what I meant!” Song Lan didn't often raise his voice—when you're much taller and stronger than most people you either don't need to or you avoid intimidating people further—but this stranger had a way of getting under his skin. At the absolute end of his patience so soon in the day, Song Lan eye caught on a patch of fresh red spreading across the stranger’s ripped t-shirt. The cuts Wen Ning closed on his chest must have reopened. Song Lan seized at the sight of it. He inspected his gray tanktop and found a matching spot. His jaw tightened, the skin underneath the fabric and on his hands crawled. “Stay there,” Song Lan said while ripping the tank over his head. He nearly missed the stranger’s baffled expression. During his rush to the bathroom, A-Qing poked her head out of her room. “Da-ge please tell me you didn’t forget A-Yang was here and killed him.” The slamming of the bathroom door was her only reply. “What, rough me up then can’t stand the sight of blood?” Xue Yang called from the living room. “Oh my god, A-Yang, shut up.” Song Lan heard his sister stomp into the living room, the sound of a few bumps and muffled shouts, then quiet. Good, let A-Qing handle her own problems. Even for him it was far too early to deal with someone trying to send himself straight to the hospital. He focused on spraying stain remover on his tank and settling the thumping in his chest. The prickly sensation across his skin lessened as he scrubbed his hands and chest with antibacterial soap then a pump of hand sanitizer once they were dry for good measure. He recognized it was overkill but as the sanitizer dried on his hands his jaw relaxed, the tension between his shoulder blades let go. He hadn’t gotten someone else’s bodily fluids on him in a long time. “Da-ge?” A-Qing’s voice was anxious. “Did he really bleed on you? Count to ten or something before you come out, A-Yu will never forgive me if you kill him.” “Wha?” Song Lan opened the door as Mo Xuanyu shuffled out of A-Qing’s bedroom, one eye still shut and hair ruffled. The scene came into focus and his other eye shot open. He gasped, far too dramatically in Song Lan’s opinion. Mo Xuanyu rushed over to fuss at the stranger’s stained chest or rather the air above it. He perched precariously on the edge of the couch, afraid his tiny weight would disturb him too. “Are you okay? What happened?” “Don’t worry, I’m fine. What’re you upset for?” Song Lan noted how the stranger’s aggressive posture dropped the second he set eyes on a familiar face. He sounded less like a hissing cat too.

rainy clandestine meeting at the roadside

Master always instructed us to travel light.” “That he did. But Brother, this is a journey of many li and great importance. I don’t believe these will suffice.” “I took no more than this on my pilgrimage.” “Our pilgrimage had no set date of return—the peace talks commence in three weeks. The order nor the country can afford for you to miss them.” Shen Qiao climbed into the saddle, casting a serene smile down at Yu Ai. “You greatly exaggerate this one’s importance.” Before Yu Ai could interrupt him, he held up a hand clad in silvery-white leather. “While I am sincere in my quest for peace, I doubt my presence could play a big part.” Yu Ai clearly had much to say on the matter but he swallowed the words, bidding his brother farewell and good luck. text on white background: Shen Qiao did not need to turn in his saddle to know Yu Ai stood watch until he disappeared from view. Part of him longed for Yu Ai’s company. As the highest ranking members of the order after their master’s passing, they rarely left the mountain or each other’s side. He sagely suppressed such childish desires with the knowledge that he could trust no one else with the safety of the order other than Yu Ai. And the chance to meet new people. Shen Qiao’s first few days passed without incident. Any inns this close to the mountain would graciously insist on putting the Grand Master of the order up free of charge and Shen Qiao, being a man of honor, would insist on paying the innkeeper. Shen Qiao avoided this awkward situation by sleeping under the stars. He spent many a night this way during his pilgrimage; he missed having the heavens as his ceiling, the earth as his bed. Strangely, he felt closer to the vastness of the heavens in these patches of wilderness than he did atop the mountain. text on white background: On the fifth day, he reached a road stop and those same heavens opened up. The downpour was so thunderous it drowned out the world beyond the wooden pavilion. Shen Qiao tied his horse under a nearby tree to shelter it best he could. Its hooves were caked in mud and Shen Qiao fare no better in the short trip under his own shelter. He accepted the steaming pot of tea from the owner, wringing out his cloak between sips. “Even the knights from the great order are defeated by the heavens I see.” Shen Qiao looked up to see a man, one or two decades older than him, clad in purple robes, staring back at him from under a large brimmed hat. He was conspicuously dry. A mage, Shen Qiao noted. “A knight makes use of sword and shield, we have no more sway over the heavens than anyone else.” The man’s eyes crinkled at the edges. “This venerable one has bent the heavens to his whim on many occasion.” text on white background: He raised a hand signaling the owner for another cup. As he did, the rain abruptly stopped pelting the roof. On all sides the silvery curtain of rain continued to fall but on the worn tiles of the roof. The owner startled then collected herself, hurrying over to present the mage with his cup. “Can I get anything else for the esteemed gentlemen?” The mage cleaned his cup thoroughly without looking at her again. “Bring us whatever passes for your best food.” Shen Qiao declined. “The tea is all I require, thank you.” The mage raised a brow as this gleaming white knight pulled out two buns and a dried fruit. “Does your great order send its knights out with no coin and so little?” “Overindulgence dulls one’s skills.”

text on a white background: Shen Qiao was born into a world of conflict. Many decades beforehand, a king unified the land and brought peace for a lifetime. That peace did not hold beyond his own. His sons squabbled over the throne when their father was barely cold, dividing the once untied kingdom into factions, each proclaiming themselves king. In his thirty years of life, Shen Qiao had lived on a mountain above it all, a sacred place where even power hungry princes did not dare defile. Though that had been in his master’s time. Shen Qiao now stood at the head of his order of knights, offering their services for the good of the people and accepting only payment from those who could spare it. In a war-torn land, few could. Shen Qiao’s brother and second in command Yu Ai believed in deviating from their master’s old ways, allying themselves to one of the princes. “We cannot involve ourselves in senseless war,” Shen Qiao said each time. “Master taught us this very strictly.” text on white background: Yu Ai sighed in response, placing a reassuring hand on Shen Qiao’s shoulder. “In doing this we would put an end to the war, to untold bloodshed!” “For one side, maybe. But what of those we fight against?” “Brother, Grand Master. Any prince that has our backing gains a stark advantage over his brothers. If we enter the fray, with our might and historic reputation, no one would dare stand against us.” “Then you are asking me to decide who best suits the throne. That decision does not belong with me or any of this order.” Once they reached this point, Yu Ai admitted defeat and retreated for the moment. But never for too long. He persisted trying to persuade Shen Qiao almost daily, bring it put whenever their supplies ran low, as their recruitment numbers dwindled, a knight came back from the outside world injured—or not at all. Shen Qiao held steadfast to his master’s teachings. text on white background: The matter settled itself the day they received the most unexpected missive: an invitation to a ball held in the Third Prince’s manor. The Third Prince himself had invited Grand Master Shen Qiao as a representative of his holy order to act as a neutral party in peace talks. If these peace talks held even a glimmer of hope to end the suffering of the common people, Shen Qiao believed it was his solemn duty to attend. “The Third Prince presents himself as a man of honor,” Yu Ai said, brimming with equal parts relief and triumphant that Shen Qiao had seen reason at last. “Of all his brothers, he is the one to call for peace. We can place our faith in him.” Shen Qiao watched his brother’s reflection in his tea cup. He loved him dearly yet worried for him. He concerned himself too much with the workings of the outside world. “Yet he took up arms as his other brothers did in a bid for the throne.” text on white background: “What choice did he have? There was little disagreement about Shen Qiao’s decision on how to proceed after he accepted the invitation. He planned on journeying to the Third Prince’s manor on his own. Since becoming Grand Master, he had not stepped foot off the mountain and it had been many years since his great pilgrimage across the land before he was allowed to officially become a knight. He detached himself from the politics of the world but he did miss its people, the way they lived.
