You are incorrect. The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point is a federal service academy. All the midshipmen that graduate are licensed merchant mariners AND commissioned officers in the US Naval Reserves, unless they choose 5 years active duty military service

Wrong. The Merchant Marine Academy is a Federal Service Academy. Every midshipman there is a member of the Naval Reserves while in school. They graduate as either 3rd Engineers or 3rd Mates. They are ALL COMMISSIONED OFFICERS. And are required to do 7 years reserve duty or 5 years active duty.
