Today I taught two of my favorite poems from Gary Jackson's book "Missing You Metropolis," and got to have a fantastic conversation about marginalization and monstrosity in metaphor. What makes a mutant (or a person) a monster? What does it mean to forget who you are?

When I walk downtown, people don't run but walk fast. They know I'm a mutant, but the gravity draws them near. Things got better once I laid my hands on a woman. A car knocked her body in the air like a heated molecule, and didn't bother to stop. The crowd called an ambulance, but when they saw me— my face bright as a halo, they believed I was the second coming. I touched her. They thought I brought her back, but I told them I'm no Jesus. I simply take the good cells and fix them, discard the dead ones like flicking ash into the air. Now people won't leave me alone. I jump-start cars, bring dead dogs to life, a girl brought me her dry goldfish. How could I refuse?
