Thanks for the clarification! I remember hearing about Yudkowsky connecting the crusade against death with losing his brother and read into it a fear of loss and being left alone. I haven't really kept track of any of the MIRI/SIAI/LW stuff for a while now though so 🤷

iirc Yudkowsky's transhumanist bent really kicked into gear when his brother died while Yudkowsky was a child. There certain is a fear of death of the self, but I suspect it's rooted much more in a fear of being left behind or left alone by those dying.
