I remember a pair of gay male friends I knew—fairly gender conforming, middle class white men—talking openly about drag as a specifically gay liberation device, contrasted with transsexuality as “trying to fit in,” “conforming to gender norms.”
The irony is just . . . A lot.

So, gay men's transmisogyny is much more rooted in an attitude that transhet women have put on too many airs, consider themselves too good for gay men, and are abandoning queerness for heteronormative pastures.

This. It feels often like trans women are made to answer for EVERYONE’S sins. This makes sense when we understand that trans women are treated as being in permanent debt—a position of owing much but being owed nothing.
What I have gathered from the liberal feminist discourse on gender and trans issues is that men are entirely blameless for upholding and reifying patriarchal society, because the blame seems to lie with trans women.

Adding a thought: this view that transmisogyny is ultimately misandry is part of the same view in which TERFs are the primary transphobe in society.
It's an extremely OUTSIDER view of transmisogyny.
If you've ever been the one trans girl in a locker room full of boys, you know what I'm saying.

What I see here is a culture of people who find overt transmisogyny distasteful and make a sport of dunking on the most comically hateful bigots but themselves subscribe to more subtle forms of transmisogyny that they don't even recognize.
