I learned more about kindness and humanity from reading Terry Pratchett than anyone or anything else and it isn’t particularly close

we lost him far too soon

Your reminder that someone can appear to be at the top (of the world, of their field, etc) and feel rather dramatically differently. I'm glad Jim worked through his issues, is still here with us and is still writing the books so many people love.

Absolutely brilliant science communication by @unbiasedscipod.bsky.social and Marta Tufet of GAVI. Clear explanation of why placebo controlled trials are not required for vaccines already known to be efficacious. I had to share.

This cure for sickle cell anemia was made possible by NIH-funded research to turn the gene for fetal hemoglobin back on. It was done predominantly by NIH researchers, including intramural researchers on the NIH campus.

Nothing will kill more children than the ongoing decimation of CDC, NIH, and USAID work to lift vaccine uptake in the US and world.

Child survival rose 75% in the last 50 years. Vaccines account for 40% of that. Measles vax alone was 60% of the benefit. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024.

That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved.

Show me a better investment than that.

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay

“They think they want good government and justice for all, Vimes, yet what is it they really crave, deep in their hearts? Only that things go on as normal and tomorrow is pretty much like today.”
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight

“She heard him mutter, 'Can you take away this grief?'

'I'm sorry,' she replied. 'Everyone asks me. And I would not do so even if I knew how. It belongs to you. Only time and tears take away grief; that is what they are for.’”
Discworld QOTD, from Raising Steam

“The aristocrats, if such they could be called, generally hated the whole concept of the train on the basis that it would encourage the lower classes to move about and not always be available.”

The show was a beacon of quirky positivity,

and so was he.

So grateful for what he brought to the world.

Things were going great with exercise and feeling strong, then I rolled over in bed to reach for something, my SIJ got stuck in a twisted position, and I have been in a world of pain since. It is back in position thanks to my PT, but I am scared it will take a year to heal like last time.
