#tool of the day: polishing compound. This is Luxor Super Finish, which has a grain size of 0.1 microns. That's 100 nanometres, or about the size of the average virus. Roughly 250,000 grit although that's not a very well standardised system. Make shiny! Very very shiny.

Finished! One hammer finish ring in shibuichi (copper/silver alloy) and one scratch finish ring in sterling silver. Bride and groom's initials cut into the side, rings match/stack with each other.

#tool of the day: hot glue gun. Extra hot glue.

Tough commission this week. Pair of wedding rings designed for one to be resized and worn as a single (fairly intricate) stacking set when one of them is no longer around - which is weeks away. They are both long-time friends, makes it harder. Technically challenging and only four days to do it.

Rode 15km of red (difficult) graded bike trail with the kid today. He didn't walk a single feature, didn't fall off or crash, had both wheels off the ground several times and even rode a black (severe) section as well. Absolute superstar.

If you don't have a #disco ball hanging in your sunniest window you need to have a long hard think about what you're doing with your life 🪩

#tool of the day: staple gun. This is a new acquisition, a power stapler. This beast can fire 12mm staples flush into wood. It's not something I use all the time but when it's useful it's very useful. I have a hand powered one which is fine up to 8mm but very awkward to use at unusual angles.

#tool of the day: string. Used here to make sure these rails are parallel, string is super useful. Measuring a curve? String. Ensuring your bricks are laid straight? String. Finding vertical? String. Drawing a long straight line? String (and chalk). Also #pink builder's string is a pleasing colour.

#tool of the day: anvil. Recently switched from 150kg of blacksmith's anvil to this 5kg one which is more suitable for my needs. The anvil looks like a lump of metal but it's one of the most useful and multipurpose tools in the smith's workshop. There's a reason they have been in use for centuries.

Installing a new dust extraction system today, ironically creating a gargantuan amount of dust in the process..

#tool of the day, deburring tool. Handy for removing burrs, this one is special: a gift from a man called Geoff at my first job. I was IT, he ran the engineering shop, I was talking to him about the problem of DJing with records that sat tight on the turntable, he gave me this to open them out.

#tool of the day, electric heated socks! Not strictly a tool but buys me a lot more workshop time in the winter before my feet are so cold I have to give up and get warm.

#tool of the day: fish tape. Not fish-y but for fish-ing. A long piece of spring steel with a hook at the end. Poke it through holes, along conduits or behind panels, hook your cable on and pull back. Cable in place without taking down the wall/ceiling/whatever.

#tool of the day. A "reaching into gaps to hoik out cables" thingy. Made with a scrap bit of stainless and some wood I found in a skip.
January 22, 2025 at 10:38 AM
Bought some #wood for a project. Didn't buy quite enough but thought I could bodge it with existing offcuts. Then cut the new stuff wrong so the entire lot is now junk and I have to go and buy more anyway. Hooray.

On the plus side I now have more offcuts. Mostly in stupid shapes that will be 0 use.
